A True Witness Delivereth Souls!

Proverbs 14:25 – A true witness delivereth souls: but a deceitful witness speaketh lies.

While looking for scriptural inspiration for this blog I stumbled onto this verse. It was not what I was originally looking for but when I read it I knew I had found what I was looking for. It pretty much sums up everything doesn’t it? There are only two camps in this fight we are in: The ones who speak of the way, the truth, and the life whom God uses as tools to deliver the gospel, and deliver the lost to the saved. Then there is the side of darkness that spreads lies – like their leader Satan, the Father of Lies.  But I really want to focus on the first part of this verse of what we should be, and the fruit that will bare when we are that truthful witness.

What is a true witness? The word true here can be used as faithful,  reliable, stable, and truthful (in word, action, and biblical doctrine). A witness is someone that brings testimony, or presents the burden of evidence. We should be searching for, walking in, and presenting the truth in everything we do. Per this verse when we do this, God uses us to do something exciting: Deliver Souls.

The neat thing about this part of the verse is it can be interpreted several different ways (and all valid at the same time)!  Deliver, can also mean to snatch away, rescue, or save. The word for Soul can also mean a life, a mind, or emotion.  So when you put them together you can get:

  • Snatch Away Souls from the flames of hell! Yes God uses us to do this!
  • Save Lives from suffering on this earth.
  • Rescue Minds from wrong thinking, and to turn them to truth.

These are very exciting things, and what we are called to do, but the problem comes down to are we living it?

Paul gives our faith and duty the analogy of running a race. That we are only here for a short time – yes it is hard, but it is only for a short time. And he tells us to run the race hard.  Jesus himself gave us the parable of the Lord who gave talons of silver to several servants with the idea that he would have a return on investment  after he went off and returned some time later. All of the servants except for one made their Lord a profit on the talons they were given, and when they gave back the money the Lord called them “good and faithful”. But the one that did not do anything with the silver except bury it, and then return the same amount to the Lord was called “wicked and slothful”,  and then the Lord took the silver from him and gave it to the man that did the best with what he was given.

What has God given you that he is expecting a return in investment on? What are you doing with these gifts? Are you working on making that interest to give back? Or do you have your gifts buried somewhere? What will God say to you on that day? Will you be called  “wicked and slothful” or “good and faithful”? If you are the later -  will you be the one that receives even more? Which of these three would you want to be? Which of these ARE YOU NOW? How is your race going…?

Ask not what the Kingdom of God can do for you (he has already died for your sins, what more could you possibly want), but ask what have I done for the Kingdom today?

What To Focus On

Hosea 4:6 – My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.

Your Mind

We must know the truth if we plan on living by it. Many churches do not preach the truth, and the people that go to these places are to stupid to know it. Are you a Christian? Have you read the Bible completely at least once? Studies suggest that ONLY 10 to 25% of Christians have †. Have you forgotten the law of thy God?

We must know what is going on in the world, and what God’s word says about these things. Many things that are popular and the world is pushing right now are rejected by God – premarital sex, homosexuality, and abortions to name a few. Are you partial to the things God is against because they are trendy and cool? Have you rejected knowledge?

Your Body

Very few places in the bible are the faithful given health ailments (aside from old age), Job, Jacob, and Peter come to mind. We are called to do God’s work, and I really do not see that he is giving us bodies that are cancer riddled, and weak to do this task. I think this is mainly our own doing by all the trash we put into our body.

Also when man fell in the Garden of Eden God put a curse on us. One of the pieces of the curse was that we were to work the fields to live. As Americans we do not do this anymore. Up until a few months ago I had the health of someone that made a living sitting in front of a computer the past ten plus years. We need to change our diets, and our activity levels.

Your Family

Take the information above and apply it to the Mind and Body of your family, and anyone else you can influence.  There is a saying:

As the family goes, so goes the church. As the church, so goes the community. As the community goes, so goes the nation.

How can we fix a nation in the pit of depravity, when our own family is rolling in the squalor? Have you forgotten your own children?

In closing I want to reiterate the parable of the Lord who gives talons of silver to his servants.  We find there are three types of servants: the do nothings, the faithful and the faithful that is blessed. Where are you at? What have you done for the Kingdom today?

† Barna Group has suggested that up to 65% of Christians have read every book in the Bible. But studies like this show that most of the Christians this group polls know nothing about the Bible. See Heading “Inconsistencies Noted”.
